Trixtone~ is a free, Pure Data based sinewave synthesiser triggered by an array of 16×16 toggles, a so-called Tone Matrix.
I developed it just out of curiosity after having played around with some similar flash based applications I found on the Web.
It needs two objects from the PdMtl abstractions.

Golden Shield Music

Golden Shield Music (Marco Donnarumma, 2009) is a generative composition for eight audio channels that sits somewhere between net.art and sound art originally created for the Zeppelin 2009 exhibition at the Barcelona Center for Contemporary Culture.
The work is inspired by the Golden Shield Project, sometimes referred to as the ‘Great Firewall of China’.
According to Wikipedia it is a censorship and surveillance project operated by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) division of the Communist government of China. The project started in 1998 and began operations in November of 2003.
It involves the massive use of web technologies such as IP (Internet Protocol address, a computer’s network address) blocking, DNS filtering and redirection, URL filtering, Packet filtering, Connection reset) to censor specific contents – mostly, but not only, political or historical subjects – through web search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Msn.
Google has recently bypassed the Golden Shield, thus users landing on google.cn are automatically redirected to uncensored Google Hong Kong at google.com.hk.

Technical informations

Golden Shield Music collects the twelve website’s IP that are most screened by the Golden Shield.
Therefore IP numbers are listed in a text file which feeds an automated MIDI polyphonic synthesizer. The latter translates each IP in a single note formed by 4 voices with a specific velocity.
Resulting notes are ordered by the amount of pages the Golden Shield obscured for each IP address: the website’s IP obtaining the highest page result on Google.com becomes the first note of the score and the others follow in decreasing order.
Data organizes the musical notation, establishing an abstract relationship between Internet information and musical algorithms which sounds harmonious and “handcrafted”.

A gigantic, stringy life form struggles to take life, the convulsions slowly transform its shape in a brand-new body, at last a caterpillar is revealed. From now on its whole life cycle is semantically deconstructed. While the new born butterfly feed itself, its microscopic, meaningless world becomes an immersive and surreal ambient. Where minimal and organic sounds mutate in fearful drones its last beat of wings will finally defeat the fire of Nature.

I C::ntr::l Nature (Marco Donnarumma, 2009) is an unambiguous, synesthetic action of audiovisual improvisation.
The live act represents the sarcastic celebration of the human instinct finally able to govern the nature. The improvised body gestures of the performer sculpt in real-time the soundscape and the moving images. The living creature on the screen reacts to the movements of the performer on stage in a mutual agreement and attraction.

Additional informations

The project is performed using a self-designed Human-Computer Interface called C::NTR::L. Thanks to its complex pitch detection and controls trigger system the software allows a user to process in real-time audio and visual signals simply playing a fretted musical instrument. User can comfortably stand on the stage without touching keyboard or mouse.
The development of both the software and the performance took 24 months. During this period the project was tested live at several venues, eventually the final, third version of the performance was premiered at Némo Festival, Paris, 2009.
C::NTR::L is free software released under GPL license.
