Live Media and FLOSS

This class provides digital artists without previous experience in Free-Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) the needed knowledge and skills to create audiovisual performances using the Pure Data environment. The course enables participants to understand and assimilate the diverse steps involved in the creation of a custom audiovisual performance software.

About the work

This class consists of three parts. First, participants acquire a basic theoretical knowledge of Live Media. The introduction is extended through a review of selected audiovisual works in order to explore and analyse the potential of research into the relation between sound and video.
Next, participants are introduced to the concept of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software), they familiarise with Pure Data, a graphical programming environment and understand its practical and theoretical key aspects.

In the second part, participants learn techniques and idioms to implement real-time audio-video data processing. Eventually they are lead through the process of pre-production of an audiovisual performance using Pure Data: from brainstorming and concept design, through planning of the performance format, to the collection of support materials – such as texts, tutorials – and the drawing of sketches representing the logic structure of data processing.

In the last part of the class, participants are split in smaller groups. Through practical individual exercises they acquire the technical know-how about the creation of moving images and sonic events with Pure Data. They develop an original piece of software, following three major steps: beta-testing, debug – analysis of errors and its correction – and final testing during a demo live performance.
