Pd aka Pure Data Intro

Pure Data (Pd) is one of the most used software for interactive arts and music. It was originally developed by Miller Puckette and his colleagues at IRCAM. Pd is a graphical programming language and is free and multi-platform software.
This course provides a theoretical and practical overview of the Pd programming environment and the fundamental idioms for sound, video and interaction.

About the work

First, participants learn the concept behind Pd and the fundamental role of its community. This is supported by practical tips on where to find web-based resources for individual learning/development process. Next, the class reviews relevant projects made in Pd, including new musical instruments, live media performances and mobile apps. Here the hands-on class begins: participants learn about Pd graphical user interface and its configuration. This enable them to learn how to communicate with Pd and build basic process to understand the main characteristics and potential of the software.

In the second hands-on part of the program, they create algorithmic live visuals using the GEM library. The library is explained in detail; from video real-time processing to generative Code, from motion tracking to phisycal computing, from video players to video scratching apps. The next phase is dedicated to sound synthesis and processing. Here participants become familiar with real-time digital signal processing (DSP), synthesisers, audio effects, loop samplers and recorders.

In theĀ  last part of the program, each participant develops intermediate-level audiovideo applications merging the sound and video modules they explored beforehand. Projects range from Human-Computer Interaction applications, to interactive motion tracking and new musicalĀ  instruments. Eventually, the group collectively analyses the software applications produced during the laboratory and plans its possible implementation in real-world performances. This helps them evaluate the pros and cons of given programming techniques in particular contexts.
